Youth in Policing 2024

Program Overview (2 credits)                   

 

Students MUST be referred by Durham Regional Police Service ONLY – there is no access to program via Durham Continuing Education.   

 

The Youth In Policing (YIP) Initiative, run in partnership with Durham Region Police Service, is an eight-week summer employment opportunity for youth ages 15-18, residing in Durham Region. Throughout the eight weeks, youth will interact with, and learn about, the many aspects of policing, can serve their community, and learn about leadership and teamwork. Students may be eligible to receive two high school credits for their participation in the program, and many other certifications are possible through the program.  

 Employment application is completed through the Durham Region Police Service (DRPS). Successful candidates hired by the DPRS for this program are enrolled in the three-credit co-op (DCO3O9). Registration for the co-op portion is done at the contract signing session with the DRPS in mid-June. For further information regarding application to this program please visit DRPS – Youth In Policing (Note: Durham Continuing Education does not have influence on students chosen for this program.  Students hired by DRPS are referred to Durham Continuing Education). 

 

Note: All Youth In Policing students will be participating in the co-op education program as it is a condition of employment. Special considerations allow for paid employment in a co-operative education program. Participants of the Youth In Policing program cannot take any other summer courses in any other mode of delivery during Summer 2023. 

 

Program Dates:       July 2 to August 20, 2024, Monday to Thursday, 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM 

Delivery Model:      In-person – Durham College with online components for Co-operative Education

 

Report Cards  

Final report cards will be available by the end of August/early September. For students enrolled in a DDSB day school, the report card will be sent to their home school. Students not enrolled in a Durham District Board school will have their report card mailed to their home schools at the end of August/early September. Marks will NOT be given out over the telephone. Students will be given a final unofficial mark summary at the end of their program. 

 

Registration Instructions ALL accepted students will be giving a registration package withing the first few sessions. Your co-op teacher will assist you with the required documents in session. 

 

Additional Documentation required for students attending a secondary school in the Durham Catholic DSB or Kawartha Pine Ridge DSB or Peterborough Victoria Northumberland Clarington CDSB or a private school, during the 2023/2024 academic year (please bring to the contract signing session in June 2024 (date TBA) Details will be sent with the signing package.

 

 Note: Registration in the co-op program cannot be completed until the above steps have been completed. Durham Region Police Service determines the calendar for this program. At time of publication of this document, the calendar had not been determined. Please refer to DRPS for the detailed calendar.
