Summer Meaningful Innovative Learning Experience (SMILE/SMILE-e)

In person/Online Synchronous/Real Time Learning 

The elementary SMILE summer program provides students who have completed grade 6, 7 or 8 the opportunity to deepen and extend their skills in literacy and/or numeracy or to reach ahead and learn new skills to prepare for the next grade through our innovative SMILE/SMILE-e program.

Course Dates and Times

The program begins Wednesday July 6, 2022, and concludes Friday July 29, 2022.  Although it is recommended that students participate each day, some absences can be accommodated.  Any planned absences should be discussed with the summer school teacher.

Program Information
The SMILE/SMILE-e program will engage students in coding activities that incorporate problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, reasoning, spatial awareness, and sequencing.  Classes are taught by an OCT qualified teacher and supported by an educational tutor.  Much of the program will require use of a Chromebook or other laptop as many activities use specialized programs or interactive online activities. Students must bring their Chromebooks to class each day. Technology is not available to borrow. 
Registration Deadline
Wednesday June 29, 2022, at 11:59 am EST.  Due to the structure of the SMILE/SMILE-e program, registrations after the deadline cannot be accommodated. 

Bussing will be available from DDSB elementary schools in the southern Durham Region to Pickering HS, DA Wilson SS and Maxwell Heights SS. When registering for these sites, please choose the elementary school closest to your home for summer school pick-up and drop off. Check our website and your email (used at time of registration) just prior to the start of program for pick up and drop off times. 


Note: the online program has been designed for students in Uxbridge, Scugog and Brock areas to eliminate up to 60-minute bus rides to the south Durham locations. If you choose to participate in the in-person program – you must provide your own transportation to and from the site.

Students with an Individual Education Plan (IEP)

For students who DO NOT currently attend a DDSB elementary school ONLY:  To support the success of identified students who receive modifications or accommodations to their program during the school year, please ensure that you submit a copy of your child’s IEP to Continuing Education prior to the start of the program.  This will be forwarded to the summer school teacher.  If you have questions, email or call 905.436.3211.  Documents may be submitted at Durham Continuing Education via  attention Michele Reid – please identify that the documents are for the SMILE/SMILE-e program.
