Important Information About Summer School 2020

  • Due to the uncertainty surrounding the re-opening of schools this summer, Durham Continuing Education is currently experiencing limitations in the types and number of courses we can offer.
  • This summer, eLearning courses will be available and on-line registration at will open on May 1, 2020 at 12 pm (GMT + 5) for students to enroll in eLearning courses.
  • We are hopeful that expanded programming choices and other registration options can take place for the current 2020 summer session, pending direction from the province and public health authorities. However, Durham Continuing Education reserves the right to revise, limit or cancel programming as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and other circumstances.

Recommended for secondary students who wish to gain up to two credits through experiential learning.  This program combines classroom instruction with practical work experience.  Students can explore future careers or fulfil co-op requirements for Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) programs.  Students are required to find their own cooperative work placements within Durham Region before June 24, 2020.  For students currently in a secondary school, it is NOT the responsibility of the home school to assist with securing cooperative work placements.  Up to two credits will be granted upon successful completion of the course. 

This program is not open to grade 8 students reaching ahead – students must have completed at least one year of secondary education to be eligible.

Bus Schedule
Will not be provided to or from placements. Transportation servicing Cannington, Uxbridge and Port Perry is available for in-class days only.

Cooperative Education 
This program is recommended for students who wish to explore an area of interest for post secondary destination.  Successful students in this program will receive one cooperative education credit one in-class credit (GLN4O1) – Navigating the Future.  Students must attend all in-class days and all scheduled on-site work experience dates.  Due to the compressed timeframe, absences may result in forfeiture of the cooperative education credit. 
Specialist High Skills Major Cooperative Education 

Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) Cooperative Education.  The program is designed for students who have identified an area of interest and are registered in a Specialist High Skills Major program at their home school.  Student placements MUST be related to the SHSM in which they are enrolled.  Successful students in this program will receive two (2) cooperative education credits linked to their SHSM program.  Students must complete a combination of in-class and on-site hours.  Due to the compressed timeframe, absences may result in forfeiture of one or both of the cooperative education credit(s).

Course Dates and Times

The two-credit cooperative education begins on June 29, 2020, and ends on August 2, 2020.

In-class hours: 8:30 am - 2:15 pm.  Placement hours are to be determined.

*Note: Placements must be approved prior to the start of summer school.  The Durham District School Board and Durham Continuing Education reserve the right to refuse placements if the Co-operative Education Teacher deems the placement unsafe or unsuitable for the cooperative education program.  Students cannot be supervised by family members at a cooperative education placement.  Please visit for further information.
